ZAI's award-winning Research and Development (R&D) Team is expert in the design, development, fabrication, installation, integration and testing of R&D prototypes for radar and remote sensing systems, combat identification applications, and torpedo countermeasures.

ZAI's research and development efforts have led to the award of four patents. ZAI recently launched our subsidiary, Terresense, Inc., to provide airborne remote sensing services for the measurement of terrestrial biomass, embedded carbon, and standing timber using ZAI's patented BioSAR30TM VHF Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system.

ZAI has a long-term, successful history participating in the Federal Government's Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Program through which we have been awarded more than 30 Phase I, II, and III contracts. ZAI has performed research and development projects for the Army, Navy, Air Force, DARPA, NASA, FAA, and Department of Energy. ZAI's currently active R&D projects include:

ULTRA WIDE-BAND (UWB) SYNTHETIC APERTURE RADAR (SAR) TO DETECT IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICES (IEDS)
  • Vehicle mounted detection of roadside bombs and IED's
  • Light weight, low power, small footprint
  • Demonstrated standoff detection
  • Under contract with U.S Army Countermine Division
AIRBORNE SAR FOR BIOMASS REMOTE MEASUREMENT
  • Down-looking Doppler processed measure of trees and carbon in tons per hectare or acre
  • Contracts/grants with NASA and DOE
  • Missions scheduled for Summer 2006 and 2007
ULTRA WIDE-BAND (UWB) 3-DIMENSIONAL HELICOPTER LANDING ASSISTANCE SYSTEM
  • Light weight 2 channel UWB radar system
  • Acts as a landing aid in brown-out conditions when landing in the desert
  • Design weight of 10 lbs including antennas
